1. My ‘Mass Effect’ Link & Info Dump

Today is Mass Effect 3 Launch day and I’ve gotten myself all hyped-up for it by re-playing the Mass Effect 2 suicide mission (everyone survived this time) and the “Arrival” DLC that I hear is a key plot point you shouldn’t miss before starting 3.

If you haven’t played Mass Effect 1 and/or 2 and like any space science fiction, well you really should play these games. Read this first link, you’ll be hard pressed not to run out and grab a copy of Mass Effect.

You can potentially skip Mass Effect 1 if you really want… If you play the PS3 version of 2 or download the “Genesis” DLC for the Xbox 360 you can play an interactive graphic novel that fills you in and lets you make key plot choices before starting Mass Effect 2.

Personally I think you’d be missing-out by skipping 1. Sorry PS3 fans, it is exclusive to Xbox 360 and PC though as it was published by Microsoft before EA bought the developer BioWare.

Pro-Tip for playing Mass Effect 1: you might want to skip a lot of the side missions and planet exploration as it was unfortunately mostly filler consisting of driving a space-buggy around boring planets with poor controls and low gravity. Filler content aside, Mass Effect 1 is a great first game in the trilogy.

    Must get Mass Effect stuff:

I haven’t actually done any Mass Effect 3 review reading so I go into the game without any expectations beyond my own. I’ve even avoided watching any game trailers since the first announcement. The scores look good, so I doubt I’ll be disappointed.

I put 52 hours into my latest Mass Effect 2 save:

  2. Jet Set Radioooo!

The Dreamcast classic in HD. I’m buying this day 1.

  3. ‘Borderlands 2’ launch date announcement trailer. The first game was great fun, this looks twice as good. Also co-op is the only right way to play.

  4. Cave Story+ PC/Mac Trailer.

This is a little game that I’ve fallen in love with after buying it as part of the Humble Indie Bundle #4 (also available via Steam & Mac AppStore for $10 or under). It’s like a mash-up of great classic 8 and 16-bit games like Metroid, Castlevania, and MegaMan. Aside from solid classic style platforming/shooting gameplay it has a lot of charm.

The “Plus” version of the game is a remaster of the original freeware game developed by Daisuke Amaya over 5 years in his free time (more info). The freeware version of the game can be downloaded here: CaveStory.org

  6. blogofastudent asked: wait... you have a pc running osx with a virtual machine running windows 7 for gaming? 0_o

lol No my PC is dual booting Win7 and Mac OS X Lion. I do see how you might have mistaken my post though… While I’m sure it could be done, a virtual machine would be too slow for most 3D gaming. I have played a few less demanding games like Torchlight with VMware Fusion and WinXP on my MacBook Pro.

  7. My custom built gaming PC running Mac OS X Lion.

Silly PC thinks it’s a Mac Pro and it seems to be running smoothly. Now to play some games in Windows 7. lol

  8. BioShock Infinite 14 min gameplay video

    OMG!

  9. RivaTuner Fan Profiles Tutorial (PC Gaming Tip)

While playing Borderlands on PC this weekend my video kept locking-up and going black for a second at a time every 5 to 10 minutes. At first I thought it might be a driver issue, but after some research I found that it was likely my graphics card overheating. I found this helpful guide on how to use the program ‘RivaTuner’ to control graphics card fan speed based on temp. I haven’t put a lot more time into the game since setting this up, but it seems to be working nicely to prevent overheating.

  10. Portal 2 (PC) crashing resolved! (Nvidia GPU)

I saw a few suggestions I hadn’t tried yet and it did the trick:

    Disable: Vertical Sync
Disable: Multi-Core Rendering (I may test with this back on as v-sync seems to be the main cause)

If the above doesn’t work, open your Nvidia control panel and set Pre-render frames to 0

  11. I’ve been trying everything to fix this issue. I’m running Windows 7 64bit, Core2Duo and an Nvidia GTX 275. I’ve been running the latest Nvidia drivers too… I even clean installed my graphics drivers, and updated my sound drivers… Read more from my post on the Steam support forums.

    Update: ISSUE RESOLVED

  12. “Minitroid” a fan made Metroid game. You can grab the demo for Windows here: Metroid-Database.com Hope Nintendo doesn’t shutdown the project.

  13. Been Playing ‘Dragon Age: Origins’ again. After about 60 hours I’m almost done with the main content… Don’t think I’ll get into the DLC or Awakening expansion though. I like the game, but it doesn’t pull me in like Mass Effect 1&2.
