1. My modified Apple ”iPhone 4 Bumpers” case.

In my impressions post about my free Apple “iPhone 4 Bumpers” case; I noted that it’s major flaw was that the opening for the dock port was too small for anything but newer Apple iPhone/iPod USB cables. This makes the case incompatible with most 3rd party accessories and car adaptors. Major fail.

With the case otherwise useless, I borrowed a friend’s dremel tool and widened the case’s dock port opening slightly. I used a larger 3rd party USB cable as a guide. It was very easy to do, but I took it slowly so I wouldn’t mess-up.

With my main complaint gone I’ve found the “Bumpers” to be quite nice. I wouldn’t count on this case for protection from a major drop, but it feels better than nothing. I also recommend getting a SPG skin to protect the screen and back from scratches.

The “Bumpers” makes my iPhone too fat to fit my belt holster so I’ve been carrying the iPhone in my pocket again. While slightly harder to get to in my pocket, it’s also less dorky.

  2. Quick iPhone 4 “Apple Bumpers” impressions.

I got my free case from Apple today. My immediate impression holding the package was “Wow how’d they sell these little things for $30?”. That being said once opened, it feels well made. It easily fit over my SGP skin, in fact the skin likely makes it fit extra snug.

After rocking a “naked” iPhone 4 since June 24, the “Bumpers” makes the iPhone feel a little fat and more rugged. This gives me mixed feelings… It feels like I have a fair amount of protection without having a full covering case. However I love the feel of the naked iPhone 4 and now my phone is too fat to fit in my Incase belt holster case, that I enjoy because it frees-up pocket space.

I’ll give the Bumper more time before I give it my final judgment. If it doesn’t work in my car I have a feeling I’ll be going naked again.

UPDATE: The “Bumpers” case does NOT work with my car AUX cable. This seems to be a common problem with almost any iPhone/iPod car audio cable or dock. I’ve opted against using this case as it’s a pain to remove the bumper just to use accessories… This is a major design flaw.

Pros: Added protection without a bulky case. Good build quality and finish; looks like a part of the phone. Fits over protective skins. All buttons are easily accessible. Raised rubber edges gives front/back some clearance and slip resistance when set on surfaces.

Cons: Feels fat and plastic like an iPhone 3G after being accustom to a naked iPhone 4 and doesn’t look quite as sexy. Is too large to fit most belt cases. Dock port and headphone jack might be too small for some 3rd party cables and accessories.

  3. SwitchEasy return policy

    SwitchEasy NUDE iPhone 4 Clear

Yesterday I received my iPhone 4 SwitchEasy NUDE case and was so unimpressed that I removed the case after 10 minutes and immediately wrote a negative review. I followed that with an email to SwitchEasy expressing my disappointment and a link to my review.

Here’s the canned reply I got:

iPhone 4 SwitchEasy NUDE Quick review.

Once announced I ordered the ‘SwitchEasy NUDE’ case for my new iPhone 4 after being impressed with the SwitchEasy NUDE for the iPhone 3GS. I figured it’d be a safe bet for anyone who hates bulky cases that hide the iPhone’s industrial design. Well I was wrong… Here’s quick list of why:

    • Clear case just shows more dust/finger prints than naked iPhone 4. Dust gets trapped inside the case and shows. [High-Res Photo1 + Photo2]
    • Sharp edges; doesn’t feel good to hold. Feels cheap.
    • Doesn’t fit tightly. The iPhone doesn’t sit flush against the case and wiggles a bit.
    • Doesn’t provide any screen protection (ie: a raised edge on front).
    • Hard to remove. The metal bezel on my iPhone actually shaved some plastic off of the case.
    • Volume buttons are little hard to press.

I don’t like anything about this case… I’ve already removed the case after a few minutes of use and will not be using it. Sadly I doubt I can return the case for a refund as I ordered directly from SwitchEasy. I’ve emailed them to inquire about a refund.

UPDATE Aug-02-2010: Info on SwitchEasy returns (Still haven’t gotten a refund).

    UPDATE Aug-11-2010: Got my refund!

  5. SwitchEasy NUDE iPhone 3GS case - 1st day impressions.

I HATE bulky iPhone and iPod cases. I always have and always will. Why cover a wonderfully engineered device like the iPhone, making it as bulky as devices from 5 to 8 years ago?! Yes the iPhone can scratch so you only have a few options to protect it without making it bulky.

I bought this “NUDE” case to replace the ZAGG invisibleSHIELD iPhone back protector I had been using on my iPhone 3GS since I got it. I’ve been using invisibleSHIELDs for years now and while their skins work great, they just tend to start peeling-off after 5 months to a year depending on use… In ZAGG’s defense, they do have a great lifetime warranty that covers peeling, it just gets annoying having to replace them every few months.

Pros: I really do like that the NUDE is only slightly thicker than a protective film like the invisibleSHIELD (maybe as thick as 2 invisibleSHIELDs) but doesn’t have any adhesive or way to peel-off from normal use. It’s very sharp looking and covers at least as much of the iPhone as the invisibleSHIELD. It also still fits great in my Incase Folio case I wear on my belt (I’ve got enough in my pockets already).

Cons: The top and volume buttons are a slightly harder to press (no really an issue). The NUDE shows fingerprints as or worse than a naked iPhone, however it does wipe clean easily. It’s also a little more slippery feeling than the invisibleSHIELD so it might be slightly more easily dropped. It also seems as though the NUDE will scratch a bit with normal use. On close inspection I already see a few hairline scratches after just a day of use.

The NUDE also comes with 2 film screen protectors. I have not yet swapped-out the invisibleSHIELD I have been using, so I can’t yet comment on the quality. However they do seem very similar to the screen protector I’ve had on my PSP for years now without any peeling or damage.

    Update 2010-05-25:

5 days in the NUDE case is holding-up well. Only annoyance is the noticeable fingerprints and oils, but as I mentioned it wipes clean easy enough. A slightly textured/matte version of this case might actually be a cool idea.

I’ve had one of the included screen protectors on my iPhone for a few days now and I’m quite happy with it. I really like the smoothness that the invisibleSHIELD lacks, it gives the screen a brighter and cleaner image and better feel for touch. Oils and fingerprints are less noticeable, and wipe off easily. It’s also quite easy to apply too because it’s a stiff film that doesn’t really bend or trap bubbles.

I did however scratch the screen protector a bit while putting it on with the included cardboard “squeegee” for removing bubbles… I’d suggest just using the polishing cloth under your fingernails to remove bubbles. It also had a sticker tab attached to show what side is witch and a way to handle the screen protector without touching the adhesive, while useful it was a pain to remove and left behind some sticky residue that needed to be removed with rubbing alcohol.

It is already showing some hairline scratches when the screen is off and in the right light, but I don’t think normal wear will cause any unsightly scratches. It’s also nice that there is an extra included for when the first screen protector wears-out.

  6. I bought this PC case off a friend yesterday. I plan to build a strictly for gaming PC with it. I already have a 24” LCD too, so I just need the PC guts and an OS.

It’s already got a power supply, DVD drive, and sound card. I think I’ll upgrade the DVD drive, and may need to upgrade the sound card if it doesn’t play nice with Windows 7. I’ve got to do my research for a parts list now… It should be a fun hobby.

Component suggestions are welcome. I’ve got to read-up on what will be the best bang for my money.

    P.S. Macs still rock!

  7. I’m thinking I might “upgrade” to this case for my iPhone. I’ve been using a little pocket slipcase that has been wearing-out quickly via the volume buttons. It’s on Amazon for $19 right now. [Review via theiphoneblog.com]
