1. Rebel FM - Episode 2
Better sound quality and more memories of EGM and 1UP.

  2. No game talk this week. Instead, we dedicate the whole episode to talking about EGM’s closure and the 1UP layoffs in the wake of Hearst/UGO’s purchase of 1UP.com. In addition to regular hosts Chris “CJ” Johnston (ex-EGM News Editor) and Phil Theobald (ex-EGM editor and former GameNow Reviews Editor), we welcome a couple more ex-Ziff guests to the program: Kevin Gifford (ex-1UP editor and gaming magazine expert/Magweasel), Greg Sewart (ex-EGM Previews and Reviews Editor), Greg Ford (EGM Managing Editor), and Andrew “Skip” Pfister (ex-EGMer, GMRer and 1UP.com Reviews Editor/Podcast Producer).
A great behind the scenes look on 1UP and EGM. It’s also turning-out to be a good video game podcast.

  3. 1UP Video Game Podcasts “Replacements” Impressions 2

See Impressions 1 if you missed it.

    • Rebel FM (RSS link) The indi reincarnation of 1UP FM, a must listen for anyone who loved the 1UP podcasts. I donated $10 to help them get started, I figure I owed them that much after enjoying their 1UP podcasts.
    • IGN Game Scoop! (iTunes link) Actually reminds me a bit of the old EGM Live podcast that was on 1UP before 1UP FM. I haven’t been a fan of IGN for a few years, but I think I’ll be taking another look starting with their podcasts.
    • IGN Three Red Lights (iTunes link) The IGN Xbox podcast. Just enough structure and interesting on topic discussion. I’ll stay subscribed.
    • IGN Beyond (iTunes link) The IGN PS3 podcast. They seem more like fanboys than the IGN 360 podcast. They can be a little annoying and rowdy but for the most part the podcast is entertaining for PS3 owners.
    • Destructoid podcast (RSS link) They are a bit more crazy than some of the other podcasters, but they had some interesting discussions in the episode I listened to. I’ll keep listening.

  4. As Promised: Episode 1 of Rebel.fm [Digg the show]

Former 1UP staff/podcasters start something new to fill the void.

  5. 1UP Video Game Podcasts “Replacements” Impressions 1

On my quest to fill the 1UP Podcasts void in my life I am listening to a bunch of podcasts I have never listened to before. So far I’ve listened to:

    • Player One Podcast (iTunes link) I picked-up on an after holiday episode so it was rather bland. The hosts are ex-EGM staff so I went back to the previous episode to get a better taste. It might grow on me but I’m not overly impressed yet… I’ll give it a chance and stay subscribed for now.
    • Gamers With Jobs (iTunes link) This was also an after holiday episode where they were missing someone but it was still actually enjoyable. In the episode I heard they talked a bit more about obscure PC games than I’d care to hear about. I’ll stay subscribed.
    • Giant BombCast (iTunes link) It’s a bit more informal than the 1UP podcasts. If they added slightly more structure it could be great. I do like that they jump right into what they were playing after the opening silliness. I’ll be subscribing and I’m sure it’ll grow on me.
    • Idle Thumbs (iTunes link) I enjoyed this one within the first 5 minutes and was fun all the way through. They actually have the best “1UP podcast” style synergy between the podcasters that makes it much more engaging. They also stay on the subject of games better than some podcasts. Less structure than 1UP podcasts, but still very good.

  6. A 1up.com review of the new iPhone game.

  7. Ambrosia Software has taken to the seas and released Aquaria for the Macintosh, an epic 2D, side-scrolling underwater adventure game offering puzzles, exploration, and combat. Drop-dead gorgeous to look at and edge-of-your-seat exciting to play, Aquaria is packed with creativity, action, and innovation.

Finally! The PC version came out over a year ago and got a lot of buzz in the indi games community and games media. The Mac port has been in development for a long time now. Ambrosia does quality work though, and apparently they’ve added widescreen support among other polishing.

Here’s a cool interview with the creator of the game.

  8. A clue based game you play in your browser by looking for hints in the source code and hints given to you. It’s very hard at times. [via MacThemes Forums]

  9.

  10. You can win items for in the game by playing the story, you will be asked to log-in to your Xbox Live account to claim your prizes.

  11.

  12. Apparently it’s called “Halo 3 Recon” and the trailer does confirm suspicions from the first trailer that it would be a re-telling of the Halo 2-3 story from the perspective of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper.

  13. Spare LittleBigPlanet beta key up for grabs

    LittleBigPlanet Beta

I was surprised last night to see an email from PlayStation Underground saying I got into the LittleBigPlanet Beta with a beta key. Well I had already gotten my hands on a beta key on the 1st via Twitter. So the good news is that I have an extra key to give away to a fellow PS3 owner who is excited about LittleBigPlanet. The beta ends on Oct 10.

UPDATE: BETA KEY GIVEN AWAY ON TWITTER!

How to get my extra beta key:

    1. You must live in the USA, this key only works for people in the USA.
    2. If you already know/follow me on Twitter; (Twitter friends will get dibs) @NetworkShadow me a message and tell me why I should give the beta key to you. The message I find most amusing will get my key. I’ll direct message the winner with my key.
    3. If you don’t already know/follow me on Twitter; (provided none of my Twitter friends nabbed it first) leave a comment on this post telling me why I should give you my beta key (with a way for me to contact you). The commenter I find most amusing will get my key.

    Good luck!
